Towards the end of the university year, you’ve probably already accomplished a lot. You’ve found the perfect student accommodation (well, only if you decided to stay in Study Inn’s luxury student rooms in NottinghamBristolLoughboroughExeterLeicester or Leeds), you’ve attended 9 am lectures and actually stayed awake for the whole thing, you’ve managed to avoid spending your entire student loan on pound a pint student nights and you’ve hopefully learnt a whole bunch of new information. Although, you still have one final hurdle; end of year exams. These can be extremely stressful, with lots of knowledge needing to be crammed into your brain in relatively short period of time. This can have you dreading the night before the exams, but there is no need to panic as Study Inn has put together some tips to leave you feeling prepared for you exam.

Eat a healthy meal

Our diet plays a huge part in our mental and physical health, so will definitely have an impact on your performance in an exam. Drinking lots of caffeine or sugar and eating fatty, greasy foods, will keep you awake on the night and leave you sluggish and lethargic in the morning, which is the exact opposite of what you want during an exam. Have a well-balanced healthy dinner the night before and your mind will be working much better for you exam.

Get an early night

You’d think this would be obvious, but there are countless stories of people deciding the night before an exam would be a great idea and wouldn’t result in a hangover disaster. Try and resist this at all costs, and try and get at least 8 hours of sleep. This will leave your brain recharged and able to recall information much better.

Go over your notes, but don’t stay up all night revising

Before you sleep, make sure you look over the work you have done. Studies have proven that sleep is where our brains ‘sort’ all the information from the day, so going over notes just before you sleep will cement them in your brain for the next morning. However, this does not mean that you should start a whole new research project at midnight. Over exertion the night before an exam will just tire you out, and leave you feeling slow and groggy in the morning.

Relax!

This might seem like stupid advice during one of the most stressful parts of university life, but it’s easy to forget that these exams aren’t the most important thing in the universe and will singularly define your life from the moment you leave the exam hall. In truth, even if you fail, it won’t be the end of the world, or even your career. So just try and stay calm and tell yourself that you can achieve great results.

Do what works for you

In the end, everyone has their own pre-exam rituals and will do what make them feel most comfortable and prepared. Don’t get too caught up in what everyone else is doing, like if someone is bragging they have spent 500 hours revising one topic. Not everyone is the same, and people will approach exams differently. Just try and do what feels right to you, rather than living up to other people’s expectations, and you’ll find yourself much less stressed out.
